For Governance & Democracy Initiative

The Governance and Democracy Initiative supports major research grants aimed at enhancing democratic participation, strengthening governance, and advancing local reform for increased government transparency, efficiency, and accountability across the five counties of the Los Angeles region. Applicants may apply for two types of grants: Planning or Research-to-Action.

Planning Grants

Suited for projects still in the development stage, this grant extends up to one year and for up to

$100,000.

1. Create your account in the online application portal.
2. Click on “Apply” in the Planning Grant box.
3. Confirm your Contact Information.
4. Complete the Application form fields.
5. Complete the Planning Grant Proposal.
6. Upload required documents.
7. Click on “Submit Application” when finished.

Research-to-Action Grants

Suited for projects that are ready to launch, this grant can be for up to two years with potential for third-year renewal. The grant maximum is $250,000 per year. Consideration for a larger award may be given

1. Create your account in the online application portal.
2. Click on “Apply” in the Research-to-Action Grant box.
3. Confirm your Contact Information.
4. Complete the Letter of Intent (LOI) form fields.
5. Upload your LOI.
6. Click on “Submit LOI” when finished.

The Foundation reviews LOIs and selects invitees to submit a full proposal for further consideration.

All applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on the submission deadline date.
