WHO WE ARE
THE HAYNES FOUNDATION has been a force for change in the Los Angeles Region (comprised of the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Orange) for over nine decades. The Foundation’s founders, Dr. John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes were passionate advocates of involved citizenship who believed that through social science research, the Foundation not only could identify critical social and political problems in Los Angeles but also offer solutions to them. The Foundation awards major research grants on governance and democracy in the Los Angeles region, archival grants, doctoral dissertation fellowships, and faculty fellowships.
OUR NEW INITIATIVE
GOVERNANCE & DEMOCRACY for the LOS ANGELES REGION
The Haynes Foundation has unveiled a new initiative to guide its major research grants: Governance and Democracy in the Los Angeles Region. The Foundation will support planning grants and research-to-action grants which, in addition to adding significantly to knowledge and understanding of issues, show promise of influencing policies and practices and improving the lives of people and our communities.
Planning grants are made for up to $100,000 for one year. Research-to-action grants can be made for up to two years, with the possibility of renewal for a third year. The grant amount is up to $250,000 per year. Depending on the nature of the research-to-action project and the proposal, consideration may be given to a larger award.
The gateway for planning grants and for research-to-action grants is a short LOI (letter of interest). The Foundation will select from among LOIs those full applications that will be invited for either program. LOIs and full grants applications can be submitted at any time and will be decided on a quarterly basis.
WE CONTINUE TO FUND OUR ANNUAL PROGRAMS:
Faculty Fellowships
The Foundation awards a limited number of Faculty fellowships, in the amount of $16,000, to social science faculty members at any university or four-year college in the Los Angeles region. The fellowships are competitive and favor proposals that are well-conceived, innovative, and break new ground on critical economic, social, and political problems in the Los Angeles region.

Archival Grants
A modest portion of the Foundation’s annual budget is reserved to support archival and cataloging projects important to Los Angeles. The relevance and significance of the materials to Southern California and public policy, along with their fragility, rarity and completeness are considered in selecting projects for awards.

Haynes Lindley Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships
Haynes Lindley Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships, named in memory of Foundation President and Trustee Haynes Lindley, are awarded on an annual basis to Ph.D. candidates enrolled at Ph.D. granting institutions in the Los Angeles region. Applicants must have their dissertation proposals approved and be working with their faculty advisers. The Fellowships are for $26,000.
